Abstract
Within a period of only a few years, police training in the United States has moved from a situation of considerable ambivalence as to the need for any training of police personnel to a situation in which the need is now widely recognized. Only fools and liars would de-emphasize the priority of police training. However, there remains a wide rift between the nature and extent of the training that is required and the form it should take. Nevertheless, one premise appears to penetrate all debates ; the need for relevancy.
