Abstract
During the past ten years, a widespread interest in pump storage peaking plants has developed in the United States. In particular during the past few years, The Southern Company has become very interested in this peaking method having one plant under construction and several others being studied. This thesis develops several computer programs for analysis of large synchronous motors used in hydro pump storage plants. First, a mathematical model of the power system and the pump motor is developed and the results presented. Next, the effect a synchronous condenser has on the starting voltage dip is investigated. Finally, the period of acceleration from 95 percent of rated speed to full speed is studied. The results of the studies presented in this thesis enables engineers to make rapid and accurate decisions concerning the facility.
