Abstract

An approach for analyzing the architecture and predicting the performance of computer systems based on a dataflow graph model is presented. The approach consists of representing the components of a computer system as the nodes of a dataflow graph and the interconnections between the components as the arcs of the dataflow graph. The elapsed time and the resources used in a component are represented by the latency time attri- bute and the operation attribute of the corresponding node. The effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated by modeling the CPU-memory subsystem of the CRAY-1S computer. The resulting model is simulated to obtain timing ang resource usage statistics using as input a control stream that represents the instruction and data stream in the real computer system. The results obtained show several areas in which the architecture can be improved. Some experiments aimec at studying the effect of removing these bottlenecks are per- formed on the model.
