Abstract
The discipline of Criminal Justice began in the early twentieth century with the initiation of the Berkeley Police School in 1908 by August Vollmer. This school was the first formal effort to train policemen in the United States. Many of the instructors were drawn from the University of California at Berkeley. 1 Vollmer believed that "the professional policeman would be distinguished from his predecessors by the level of his formal training both before and after recruitment and that new ideas from the universities could provide valuable insights into the causes of crime and the means for preventing it."
