Abstract

The relationship which exists between the press and foreign policy in American political life has been and still is the subject of much debate. The degree of influence which the press exerts on the State Department has been perceived as ranging from non-existent to powerful enough to topple governments. For example, in 1949, the Communist forces of Mao Zse-dong drove the Nationalist Army of Chiang Kai-shek from the mainland of China. Press exposure of corruption, impotence, and waste of United States money and matériel was reportedly influential in Washington's decision to withdraw its support from Chiang, causing many Americans to believe China had been betrayed.
