Abstract
Deformities of the spine in the form of abnormal lateral curvatures have been noted throughout history. These deformities, if left to progress, can become very pronounced and respiratory problems often follow. The treatment for less severe curvatures usually consists of external bracing of the individual’s torso. In cases where the curvature is extreme or progressing, surgical treatment is often required. Fusion of the spine and stabilization by metallic alloy Harrington instrumentation is the most commonly used operative technique (Shultz and Hirsch, 1973).
