Abstract

This thesis develops equations and techniques for modeling the grounding systems of power substations in detail. Equations are derived for calculating the self resistance of each component of the grounding system and for calculating the mutual resistances between each component of the grounding system. Next, techniques are developed for using these self and mutual resistances to obtain the input resistance of the grounding system. These equations and techniques are incorporated into a digital computer program, the results of which are compared with alternate calculation methods for several test cases.Since each component in the grounding system is modeled separately, the method of calculating the resistance as described in this thesis makes no simplifying assumptions concerning the shape or arrangement of the grounding system. Therefore, a major source of error found in alternate calculation methods is eliminated.
