Abstract
In the past decade the United States has suffered shortages of several raw materials which are of vital importance to the national economy. These materials must often be imported from countries which are politically unstable or openly hostile towards the United States. Recent studies indicate that the United States is dependent on foreign sources for twenty-two of the twenty-seven metals considered vital to the nation's defense and for the 1 operation of its industries. Of these twenty-two vital metals, chromium appears to be one of the most critical.
