Abstract
This thesis reports on a study of the problems associated with the ultrasonic evaluation of full penetration welds in pressure retaining bi-metallic and tri-metallic joints involving as-deposited austenitic weld material. The weld joint design was one simulating a component on a nuclear reactor known as a safe-end-to-nozzle. Because the joint is part of a nuclear reactor, explicit design requirements are set forth by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section III. Furthermore, ultrasonic examination guidelines are prescribed in ASME Sections III and XI.
