Abstract
Many neurologic and neuromuscular conditions such as cerebral palsy, stroke, brain and spinal cord injury, muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and multiple sclerosis not only impair speech production, but also make one unable to communicate with hand signals. This has the effect of virtually isolating the victim from social interaction. According to a report from the University of Wisconsin's Trace Research Institute, there are as many as 500,000 such people in this country. One family in four is at one time or another faced with a communication disorder of some degree of severity (Baker, 1982).
