Abstract

With a growing number of users getting connected to the Internet and given their growing reliance on computers, it has become increasingly important to protect the confidential information stored locally or on the Internet. There are people who greatly under estimate the threats posed in the world of information technology and believe that their identities and information are safe, and of those people who are actually concerned about security, most are unaware of the areas where they can be targeted. It is not surprising that there are very few areas in information technology that have not been compromised. It is therefore of utmost importance to understand the means employed in vital areas by hackers. Understanding the techniques used by hackers to compromise a system will actually help in strengthening the system. Hacking is no longer a domain of highly sophisticated individuals with profound knowledge in programming. It is much simpler than that. With the development of tools that are freely available on the Internet, it is possible for a person with minimal computer skills to pose a threat to individuals or a large corporation. Common methods employed by the hackers are discussed in the thesis. Interesting and simple yet effective hacking techniques are explained that can be understood and used. Various security technologies are discussed and recommendations against the threats are made throughout the thesis.
