Abstract

A retrospective cohort study was conducted to assess the association between congenital malformations and proximity to hazardous waste sites in Florida. All children whose mother lived within 10 miles of a hazardous waste site during gestation during the years 1996–1998 were in the study. Cases were children with birth defects whose mothers lived within 10 miles of a hazardous waste site during gestation. Controls were children whose mothers also lived within 10 miles of a hazardous waste site during gestation but did not have birth defects. The proximity of residence during gestation was not associated with the development of birth defects (adjusted OR = .976, 95% CI =.941–1.013). Specific birth defects such as cleft palate, cleft lip, neural tube, heart, and genitourinary defects did not appear to be associated with proximity to a hazardous waste site during gestation.
