Abstract
Objectives: Light-cured pontic pastes can be applied to the internal aspect of clear retainer/aligner trays at sites of missing teeth. Ideally, the pontic tooth should appear visually opaque and resist staining. The aim of this study was to determine if the number of coats of the paste will affect its translucency and stain resistance. Materials and Methods: 12mm diameter discs of a biocryl clear retainer material (Clear Splint) (n=10) were punch-cut. Light-cure pontic paste (Perfect-A-Smile Pontic) was applied to one side of the biocryl discs in 1, 2, 3 or 4 coats (200-400g /coat). The paste was light cured between layers. A control group consisted of an 8mm x 12mm diameter cylinder of powder liquid acrylic provisional material (Alike) that was glued to the biocryl disc. The L*a*b* color coordinates of the specimens were taken against white and black tiles. The specimens were then soaked in coffee for 12 days at 37°C. Specimens were rinsed in water and the L*a*b* color coordinates of the specimens were taken against a white tile. The translucency parameter of the specimens was measured as the color difference (ΔE00) between specimens against the white and black tiles and the stain resistance was measured as the color difference between the specimens before and afterstaining against the white tile. Translucency parameter and stain resistance were compared using a 1-way ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc analysis. Results: There were significant differences between different numbers of coats for both translucency parameter and stain resistance (p < 0.01). Materials ranked from most to least translucent: 1 coat (20.47 ± 3.98) > 2 coats (17.03 ± 1.93) > 3 coats (9.31 ± 1.48) > 4 coats (4.13 ± 0.68) > PEMA control (0.4 ± 0.17). Materials ranked from most to least staining: 1 coat (10.93 ± 1.85) > 2 coats (9.2 ± 1.42) > 3 coats (5.14 ± 0.64) = 4 coats (5.34 ± 0.62) = PEMA control (3.9 ± 0.84). Conclusion: Increasing the number of coats of light-cured pontic paste material improved its opacity and stain resistance.
