Abstract

Scaling and root planing (ScRP) is the gold standard for non-surgical periodontal therapy, yet no dentifrice has been definitively shown to improve its outcomes. This randomized controlled trial evaluated the effectiveness of LivFresh Dental Gel as an adjunct to ScRP in patients with Stage II and III periodontitis. Twenty-one participants were assigned to either a test group using LivFresh Dental Gel or a control group using a standard sodium fluoride dentifrice. Clinical parameters—including probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), gingival index (GI), plaque index (PI), and bleeding on probing (BOP)—were assessed at baseline, 30, 90, and 180 days. The primary outcome was PD reduction at 180 days in sites with baseline PD ≥4 mm. Secondary outcomes included changes in GI, PI, BOP, and CAL. Both groups showed significant PD reductions from baseline; however, the test group demonstrated greater PD reduction in deeper sites (−1.73 mm vs. −1.09 mm; p = 0.02). At 180 days, the test group also showed significantly greater improvements in PI (p = 0.04) and BOP (p = 0.03), with no adverse effects reported. These findings suggest that LivFresh Dental Gel may enhance periodontal therapy outcomes when used alongside SRP. Larger and longer-term studies are warranted to confirm these results and explore the potential of this adjunct in reducing the need for surgical intervention.
