Abstract
Self-adhesive cements have gained popularity due to their ease of manipulation as they do not require a separate etch, primer, or bonding agent to bond to the tooth or crown surfaces. However, the use of an adhesive bonding agent with a self-adhesive resin cement has been claimed to improve its bond strength. The objective of this study is to compare the retention bond strength of 2 self-adhesive cements on to the tooth surface with and without the use of bonding agents with a known control. Materials and Methods: A total of 50 extracted non-carious second premolar teeth were collected. The teeth were mounted, prepared for crowns with a standardized dimensions of 2 mm axial height and 20° taper. Optical impressions were obtained, and preparation dimensions measured to determine surface area. Zirconia CAD crowns were designed and milled. Five groups, n=10, were fabricated (2 self-adhesive resin cements with and without bonding agent and a RMGI control). Cementation was performed under a 40 N load, and specimens stored in dH2O. All samples were thermocycled (10,000 cycles, 5-55° C, dwell time of 15 s). Failure mode and retentive bond strength (MPa) was determined with a crosshead speed of 5 mm/min. Significant differences were assessed at p < 0.05. Results: One-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD post hoc test revealed significant differences between the groups. Resin cements performed best with adhesives, although there were differences between groups with and without adhesive. The control (Rely-X Luting) demonstrated the lowest retentive strengths. Mixed failures modes were noted with a majority of fractures occurring on both tooth and crown surfaces. Conclusion: The null hypotheses were rejected that there were no differences in retentive bond strength with differing cements or use adhesives. Within the limitations of this study, it may be concluded that even though self-adhesive cements are marketed as not requiring additional treatments on crown as well as tooth surface, use of an additional bonding agent significantly increases the retentive strength for zirconia crowns.
