Abstract
Age has a significant effect on the body’s ability fight off disease, recover, and maintain collagen structures, and it has been observed that older adults have a higher prevalence of periodontal diseases. Studies have shown that age is a risk factor for alveolar bone loss. However, there is a lack of research done looking at if this is a linear progression or if there is a specific age that susceptibility increases. The aim of this study is to investigate (1) changes in radiographic bone loss in varying age groups in the University of Alabama patient population and (2) to evaluate the correlations between bone loss and self-reported medical conditions. Lastly (3), to be part of a larger multi-centered study that currently lacks representation from an area in the Southern United States. Radiographic bone loss, self-reported height and weight, and relevant medical history will be recorded and observed in 1000 patients from University of Alabama Birmingham School of dentistry. Radiographic bone loss greater than 2.5mm distance from the cemento-enamel junction (CEJ) will be recorded. Of the 1000 patient records analyzed, 100 will come from each age cohort of the following: 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64 with about 50 males/50 females per cohort. Data will be compiled, and descriptive statistics will be calculated.
